From Passionable Fishing, our Japanese-language journal.

When ajing is difficult, I get more bites on ami colours—colours imitating tiny shrimp-like prey. That is why I consider them essential.

Orange is fairly similar, although I do not own any. If I have an ami colour, it amounts to much the same thing. Or perhaps ami is the original version.

My wife peered into the tackle bucket and found ami swimming inside. She began studying the way they moved.

“Ah, I see. That is the movement we need.”

So, for that reason—whatever reason that was—it is good to have ami colours with you.

I always carry clear lures as well, but I feel ami colours have a slight edge. The bite, and the way the fish eats the lure afterwards, seem to say: “I am hungry!”

The soft lures I normally carry

  • Slim: Aji Caro Swamp — Okiami Power and Okiami Holo.
  • Slim: Fisit Nude — various colours.
  • Bulky: Aji Adder Pro — Hissatsu Clear (必殺クリアー).
  • Bulky: Brilliant 2.5-inch — Ginpun Okiami Glow (銀粉オキアミグロー, silver-flake krill glow) and Reaction Silver.

“Okiami” means krill; the colour names above follow those in the Japanese account. These are the author’s choices and impressions recorded in April 2020.

Related: choosing soft-lure size for strong current, and trying Momoaji when bites will not turn into hook-ups.
