From Passionable Fishing, our Japanese-language journal.
Just give us a little time. We are going to come up with some interesting T-shirts. There is a skilled calligrapher in the family, so I would like to begin with a series of bold, ink-brushed characters. White lettering on a black shirt would look good.
First, something that saves you any embarrassment when you catch nothing: “Beginner” (初心者). Then a shirt for a day when you suspect the fish will not cooperate: “Patience” (忍耐).
A few more possibilities
- “In training” (修行中) — handy when you find yourself fishing among people who really know what they are doing.
- “Still learning” (勉強中) — no need to feel embarrassed about being less skilful.
- “For some reason, I cannot catch anything” (なぜか釣れない) — particularly funny if you are catching plenty.
- “Angler” (釣り人) — simple, with its own charm.
- “Topwater” (トップウォーター) — amusing when you are actually jigging.
- “Over one metre” (メーターオーバー) — good for a laugh while catching tiny fish.
- “Waiting for a feeding frenzy” (ナブラ待ち) — just right for standing motionless, looking out to sea. Or perhaps even funnier if you are casting away furiously.
- “35” — going one better than Thirty Four, the fishing-tackle brand… or something like that. Yes, well, that is the general idea.
And of course, there is one we need for ourselves: Moving Sinker / msinker.com.
Whatever else happens, we have to enjoy life.
