From Passionable Fishing, our Japanese-language journal.

I have tried around thirty high-end ajing rods: the principal models from Thirty Four, the Yoihime series, ClearBlue, Evergreen and Breaden.

My main working line-up has ultimately become:

  • VARIVAS 610 S.
  • Magnum Craft titanium-tip rod, equivalent to about 5.5 ft.
  • Yoihime Ten 54 FL.

More recently, I have been using Breaden’s titanium-tip series: the 410, 506, 602 and others.

Cutting the rear grip on the Breaden 410 down to about 4 cm transforms it into an extraordinary rod for me. A PVC tube with a 9 mm internal diameter and a length of about 30 cm works well in the rod stand. I use the Breaden 506, described here as 5.6 ft, without modifying it.

I like the Thirty Four PSR60 and HSR63, but for some reason they rarely get an outing. The SBR68, designed for rockfish, does. I often use it with PE #0.3 and 0.3–0.7 g metal jigs.

Removing all the EVA from its grip improves the sensitivity for me and makes it feel lively. It ends up looking like a prototype. Interesting.
