From Passionable Fishing, our Japanese-language journal.

Occasionally, our regular strong-current spot becomes extraordinarily difficult to fish. The other day was one of those days.

The fish were well out, near the surface, and making short bites. They would spot an assist hook in the upper water and refuse it.

Only one soft lure worked: the clear Aji Adder Pro. There were no bites on the 2-inch Beam Stick. The size of the young baitfish matched a 3-inch Aji Adder Pro, especially the Hissatsu Clear colour.

The best jighead was a TICT Ajista S in 0.4 g. The split sinker needed to be about 5.5 g. Going either lighter or heavier seemed to make this particular method difficult.

My wife spent some time finding it. Once she did, she caught more than twenty fish over 20 cm in about an hour—almost a fish every cast.

By the time she explained the method and I tried it, the feeding window was nearly over. For research, I changed to a smaller lure: no bites. Changed the weight: very few. Added an assist hook: none. It taught me quite a lot.

The rod mattered too. It needed to cast a long way and have a sensitive tip. The VARIVAS 610 proved ideal.
